The Drumroots workshop team recently ran a workshop for some forty students who were about to complete a course in leadership ran by an organisation called Common Purpose. The workshop was held by Z Arts (formally Zion Arts Centre) as part of their programme to host a growing number of team building and corporate workshops.
The Z Arts Gallery space provided a spacious and well lit environment for us to do our thing; our brief was to give this group of people something interactive and fun to do together as they neared the end of their course, but with an emphasis on leadership within a large group. Of course inside an hour’s session we can’t show forty odd people how to lead a massive drumming ensemble, so instead we lead the group and tried to demonstrate how the sum of many simple things (in this case drumming patterns) can make something complex and spectacular when brought together.
The large group responded enthusiastically and seemed to really enjoy the session. At the end their tutor asked them to offer feedback and their immediate impressions on the workshop; this was a bit of a treat as it’s an unusual luxury to hear what people thought of our work. We really appreciate all the positive feedback and enjoyed this fresh perspective.

From a Z-arts perspective, this was a great pilot for one of our creative corporate away day packages. Drum Roots really understood what we, and our clients Common Purpose, were looking for. I think everyone enjoyed the reflection on the session as much as being amazed at what they could achieve in so short a time, even when the thought of ‘being creative’ originally filled them with horror!
